Etty Hillesum z"l

Etty Hillesum, 27, died writing a diary during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The diary, which was published 40 years after her death in the Auschwitz camp, reflects her ideas about the need for human compassion, art, and aesthetics in order to overcome the many obstacles that life presents to us. Through her writing, Etty Hillesum was able to cope with the great hardships of life under Nazism. Even in the darkest hours of the Holocaust, Etty did everything in her power to change the world around her, alleviating the suffering of those around her through dialogue, compassion, and an unexplained belief in the good that resides in the human heart.

Founder of the "Voice of Youth" ensemble.
In 2006, at the age of 19, she joined the theater group "Théâtre du soleil" under the direction of Ariane Mnouchkine. She participated as an actress and creator of the theatrical production "Les éphemeres", which was a great success around the world. Afterwards, she turned to directing studies at the Kibbutzim Seminary. During her studies, she founded with the assistance of the French Embassy a theater troupe in the Hura local council for Bedouin youth; The group exists and operates even today.

In 2010, after graduating in directing, Gal won a research scholarship from Wallonie Bruxelles International. She chose to research the works of the Belgian playwright René Kalisky at the ULB University in Brussels, and to promote his plays among the Israeli public. After two years, she staged a theatrical performance in Lublin and nearby villages that had been Jewish towns in the past. The play was based on the stories of Yitzhak Bashevis Singer and the history of her family before and during the Holocaust.

Returning to Paris, Gal completed her master's degree at the University of Sorbonne, during which she worked with renowned European directors in creating an anti-war performance around the university campus in San Dani, together with students from abroad.

Out of concern due to the deepening of socio-political gaps in Israel, Gal decided to create a new project in the city of Jaffa: the "Voice of Youth" ensemble.
Today, she serves as the president of the Etty Hilsom Youth Theater in Jaffa. The theater is a unique project and the first of its kind, and was established as part of an Israeli-French collaboration.

Through the project, teenagers - Jews, Arabs and immigrants - who grow up in an environment that makes it difficult for them to dream big dreams - are given the opportunity to dream and fulfill the world of theater in all its shades. The Etty Hilsom Youth Theater seeks to provide the youth with the tools that the world of theater provides to those who come through its gates, and to enable them to create a real work of art in the mixed city of Jaffa. The theater was visited by renowned theater directors from France, Israel and Poland.
